Delta Digest Newsletter | June 2023

Welcome to the June edition of the Delta Digest.

Bringing you the latest updates and research from the frontlines of the Living Deltas Hub.

In this edition, we are thrilled to present our comprehensive report to the Government of West Bengal, showcasing the results of our Hydrodynamic Survey along the embankments of Kumirmari Island in the Indian Sundarban. This survey holds vital insights into the risks of embankment failure due to coastal erosion and flooding, urging the implementation of innovative coastal protection strategies.

Our researchers have also launched two policy briefs that delve into critical issues affecting the Indian Sundarban. The first highlights the significance of systematic estuarine water quality monitoring, providing valuable data on changing ecosystems and the impacts on livelihoods. The second brief explores potential solutions for coastal erosion risk management, offering insights into sustainable and resilient approaches.

In the wake of recent events, we reflect on the devastating Cyclone Mocha, which shattered records as the strongest cyclone ever recorded in the north Indian Ocean. We examine the impacts on vulnerable communities and shed light on the efforts of our Living Deltas Climate Modelling Team in contributing to policymaking and preparedness to mitigate the worst effects of extreme weather.

But it's not all about research and reports. Our recent blog posts take you on a journey through the buzzing world of bees in Ben Tre, the creative workshops inspiring young minds in Bali and Kumirmari islands, and the fascinating exploration of sediment as a window into the past. We also shine a spotlight on our talented researcher, Jinghua Jiang, whose work in compound flood risk modelling and assessment is pushing the boundaries of delta research.

In other news, the Living Deltas Hub has been making waves globally, with successful sessions at EGU2023, SEFs and the International Delta Summit.

Stay connected with the Living Deltas Hub Newsletter to remain at the forefront of South and Southeat Asian delta conservation, resilience, and sustainable solutions. Together, let's create a future where deltas thrive and communities flourish.
