Living Deltas colleagues at the 2022 Annual Hub Meeting in Can Tho, Vietnam (Phan Ky Trung)

2022 has been a better year for the Hub. Following an intensive period of reporting and pitching to UK Government, the 2020-21 funding cuts imposed on the twelve GCRF Hubs, including Living Deltas, was replaced with restoration of our funding for the last two years of the Hub to March 2024.

2022 has also seen a significant rise in our Hub travel and fieldwork and personally I have been to India (twice), Bangladesh, and Vietnam (both the Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta) since travel restrictions eased at the start of the year. Most of our Hub researchers have also been busy on fieldwork and in September we were delighted to hold our first face-to-face whole Hub Annual meeting since March 2020. The meeting was held in Can Tho on the Mekong Delta (more details below, and I would like to extend particular thanks to our Can Tho colleagues for the hard work spent to make the meeting a real success). While Zoom has been an absolute lifeline for our Hub in terms of keeping in touch with each other and Hub partners in the period since March 2020, nothing compensates for face-to-face interaction.

The coming year 2023 will be a period of data analysis and dissemination and, importantly, engagement and impact generation, and to that end we will be entering a key phase of partner dialogue towards policy impact and influence on a range of initiatives in our four delta social-ecological systems. My thanks to our new Hub Communications Manager Holly Thacker for this Newsletter, we hope you enjoy it along with future editions.

Best wishes for 2023!
