Anh Vu and Graham Long present "Localising the SDGs – Towards a Delta-SDG Framework" at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences

On November 14th, 2023, Anh Vu and Graham Long delivered an insightful presentation at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Regional Sustainable Development Conference, introducing a pioneering perspective on localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — the Delta-SDG Framework.

The presentation outlined an alternative approach to localising the SDGs within socio-ecological systems (SESs), offering a fresh conceptual lens that centres on the closely coupled human-natural systems within deltas. This approach directs our focus towards the intricate interlinkages, trade-offs, and synergies, not only within but also across governance boundaries. By contextualising localisation within these interrelationships, it raises questions about governance arrangements, challenging the conventional perspectives of localisation from both "above" and "below."

The Delta-SDG Framework comprises four key domains, each designed to capture specific elements of the core interactions between the SDG agenda and deltas:

  1. Delta Ecosystem Services and Hazards: Exploring the ecosystems services generated by deltas that benefit human wellbeing - and potential hazards.

  2. Human Impacts: Analysing the influence of human activities on delta environments.

  3. Vulnerability and Marginalization in the Delta Context: In line with the SDGs’ pledge to ‘leave no one behind’, analysing to the nature of vulnerability and marginalization within delta regions.

  4. Governance: Examining the governance structures that impact the sustainable development of deltas.

During the presentation, the speakers discussed sample indicators and metrics for each domain, to demonstrate its implications for measurement – and, by extension, policymaking. The insights shared were particularly tailored to the context of Vietnam, emphasising the relevance and significance of the Delta-SDG Framework in the local landscape.

The presenters engaged in a rich discussion with Vietnamese policymakers, academics and researchers about the key challenges associated with implementing the framework and outlined the next steps for its integration into the Vietnamese context.

Anh Vu and Graham Long's talk marked a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on sustainable development, shedding light on innovative methodologies for localising SDGs in delta regions.
